For this ocarina I used walnut wood, which I found in the forest on a special day – December 24th in Medininkai Lithuania. In ancient times, the Balts celebrated this time as the Winter Solstice. Our ancestors knew that right in midwinter, on the shortest day of the year, when nature is most deeply asleep, the collected wood is the sturdiest and most durable (its sap is frozen, therefore it does not crack while drying). Besides that, it was believed that a tree taken during the solstice preserves within itself the energy of rebirth and the returning sun, therefore the instrument itself acquires a strong, living spirit. While preparing the wood, I dried it without even removing the bark – I really wanted to leave all the beauty created by nature and the unique history of this little tree. This walnut tree was approximately 10 years old, but its growth was suddenly interrupted by an old, huge spruce that fell on it. But I decided not to let it decay and to give it a second life. I hope that in good hands it will be full of music and joy 🙂 I tuned the ocarina in the G Mixolydian scale, because, in my opinion, it is exactly what best conveys the vitality of this young walnut tree. The sound of the instrument is such... as if not from our world. To me it cozily reminds of Bag End from "The Lord of the Rings", as if somewhere in a cozy tavern by the fire a cheerful young hobbit were playing 🙂 By the way, in order to play it, you don't need any special musical skills. It is a very intuitive instrument, so you will be able to play it and rejoice from the very first moments. If you are from Vilnius, by agreeing in advance you will be able to inspect and try out the ocarina in person! 😉
